Chileno Bay Golf Course is located midway between San Jose del Cabo and Cabo San Lucas.. Tom Fazio has designed several challenging and beautiful championship golf courses for numerous Discovery Land communities, and his latest jewel at Chileno Bay is amazing. You’ll enjoy amazing vistas of both the coastline and the Sierra de la Laguna Mountains as every hole offers a view of the Gulf of California.
Overlooking the Sea of Cortez on the Baja Peninsula, the impressive residential development at Chileno Bay occupies a spectacular 1,200-acre site that includes, in addition to the ocean-fronting villas, a fabulous beach club and a lovely boutique hotel.
This 18-hole layout is very different to a regular Fazio design, with no rough to speak of and an extremely rugged style of bunkering. Effectively, golf balls have to be kept in play on the mown grass or they’ll be lost in the surrounding desert scrub. It’s certainly a demanding course, with a slope rating of 145 from the back markers, but there’s sufficient fairway width to allow regular mid-handicap players to stay in the game quite comfortably – and perhaps enjoy the wonderful sea views along the way!
One of my most memorable holes is the #6, a long snake-like par 5 that slithers down towards the ocean. A demanding tee shot over a waste land is required to reach the fairway. Next you’re faced with a dog leg left second shot followed by a dog leg right approach shot to a green that is tucked into a valley protected by a hill.
