The history of the castle is said to go back to the year 1259, when it was inhabited by the Sanders van Hemessen family. After a long and severe dispute with another family, Corneel Sanders van Hemessen was beheaded on the orders of Philip the Good in 1459. According to legend, his spirit still haunts the castle…
In the early 16th century the castle took on a more residential character, and necessary repairs and new construction were carried out. The garden was enlarged by the draining of the marshy surrounding area, resulting in the vast and exceptionally valuable estate that you see today.
