Blainroe Golf Club is a golf course situated about 3.5 km south of Wicklow Town in County Wicklow. With sea views from all 18 holes, this enjoyable and challenging parkland course carries the prestigious Hawtree & Son design signature and is recognised as one of the finest courses on the East Coast since it’s inception in 1978.
With a Par 72 length of 6175 meters(6800 yards) the course is always well maintained and offers an interesting variety of holes with the 14th played over the sea from a cliff promontory, probably being the feature followed by a testing par 3, the 15th which was part of a re-design of all greens and tees to USGA championship standard re-opening in 2005.
Almost thirty years after his father created Blainroe Golf Club, Martin Hawtree was involved in a renovation and upgrade programme on the course, redesigning tees and installing USGA specification greens before the course was reopened in 2005.
The course is routed in two loops of nine, each ending beside the clubhouse. The front nine contains back-to-back par fives at holes 4 and 5 and the first par three is not encountered until the 194-yard 8th hole, played downhill from an elevated tee position.
Nearly half the holes on the card are doglegged; some downhill, others uphill, often with out of bounds on one side of the fairway to further concentrate both tee shot and approach play.
The signature hole is the 330-yard, par four, 14th where the tee shot is played over the edge of the cliffs with out of bounds (75 feet below!) on the right and a wooded area on the left of the fairway
Martin Hawtree has been involved with such prestigious Courses as Royal Birkdale, Sunningdale, Trump International Scotland, Doonbeg Links, Lahinch, Portmarnock, Dooks, The Island, Fontainebleau and Vilamoura (Millennium).
The modern Clubhouse, overlooking a private beach, assures visitors a warm welcome and has full bar and catering facilities. A fully stocked Professional shop run by PGA pro John McDonald also offers club, trolley and motorised buggy hire.
